Travis G. Bradley

Research

Phonological Theory: Optimality Theory, Articulatory Phonology, and the phonetics-phonology interface; phonetic and phonological variation in Ibero-Romance and other languages; historical Romance phonology; second language acquisition and technology-enhanced language learning. Prof. Bradley's research publications include articles in Probus, Lingua, Southwest Journal of Linguistics, Lingua(gem), and the Journal of Educational Computing Research. He has also contributed to edited volumes such as Optimality-Theoretic Studies in Spanish Phonology, Historical Romance Linguistics: Retrospective and Perspectives, Laboratory Approaches to Spanish Phonology, and Experimental and Theoretical Approaches to Romance Linguistics.

Research Interests

  • Variation and change in the sound system of Judeo-Spanish (Small Grant in Aid of Research 2006-08, UC Davis Academic Senate)

  • The relationship between low-level phonetic implementation and higher-order phonological structure

  • The formalization of gestural representations and constraints in Optimality Theory

  • The role of contrast in constraint-based approaches to phonology, such as Dispersion Theory

  • Rhotics, or r-type sounds, including their phonetic variation and their phonological behavior in both synchrony and diachrony

Papers In Preparation

  • Allomorph Selection and Lexical Preferences in Judeo-Spanish (In progress)

  • Rhotic Contrast and Neutralization in Veracruz Mexican Spanish (In progress; co-authored with Erik W. Willis)

  • Accounting for Intrasyllabic Rhotic Metathesis: The Interplay of Articulation and Perception (In progress; co-authored with Eric Russell Webb)
